Iwould say play aoe2 if you like the nostalgia, similiar civilizations and the dark age. Play aoe4 if you don't like the dark age of aoe2 (aoe4 basically starts in feudal), like civilizations which are more asynchronous than in aoe2 and like more modern gameplay.

Ageof Empires 2 is one of the best solid classic RTS out there, AoE 2 Definitive Edition soon will be out, but it's a classical RTS formula: build base, manage resource production (completely different from Stronghold economy and production lines) and tactics (the game is a prety wild rock-paper-scissor on battles).
